What's Your Reference Strategy?

New webinar series promotes the value of reference in helping students build essential information skills

September 10, 2015, Boston, Oxford – Credo, the industry leader for information skills solutions, is presenting a new series of free webinars featuring topics and speakers to help libraries explore new ideas to innovate their reference services.

“The nature of reference and the needs of students are rapidly changing, this is an accepted fact,” said Mike Sweet, Credo CEO. “In a changing environment it is even more critical to pause to consider how well your strategy is working and what adjustments you need to make. These webinars are intended to provide the venue for sharing the ideas, challenges, and success stories we are hearing from our customers and publishing partners around their reference strategies and innovations.”

The first session, “The Four (or Five?) Bs: Preparing for the Research Process,” will feature Jodie Morin, Library Director at Buena Vista University in Iowa.  The Four (or Five?) Bs is Ms. Morin’s strategy for persuading students that when faced with a research assignment, a few minutes spent doing background research is a wise investment of their time rather than simply turning to Google. The live, 30-minute webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, 15 September, 3:30PM EDT. Register here.

The second session, scheduled for Thursday, 8 October, titled  “Reference Publishing: Fortitude, Leadership, and Passion,” will be presented by Rolf Janke, CEO of Mission Bell Media. Much has been written, discussed, debated, and argued about the future of reference.  Mr. Janke’s presentation will focus on why we should be focusing on quality and curated content, and moving away from “format” emphasis.  Rolf Janke spent fifteen years as the founder and VP/Publisher of Sage Reference, where he created one of the most successful reference programs from print to digital. Now, he’s matched that experience with his passion for leadership studies to form Mission Bell Media, a publishing company focused on leadership and innovation. Future sessions will cover high-interest topics such as transitioning from a print-based reference collection, meeting the needs of nontraditional and distance students, the role of reference in library instruction, and others.
