  • This detailed encyclopedia provides very comprehensive information on all economically important fruit and nut products worldwide. Arranged alphabetically by family and then genus, this volume requires using the index to locate material. Articles cover everything from in-depth descriptions to growing advice and economic information. More than 290 articles cover 322 fruits and nuts, many in extensive detail. Additionally, 84 color plates illustrate subtle color differences in fruits, among other things. Each article employs the same outline--an introduction, followed by articles on history, world production, health benefits, and uses, and finally sections on botany and horticulture. For botany, coverage ranges from taxonomy and morphology to growth and development, including climatic requirements and reproduction. For horticulture, subtopics include training, thinning, fertilizing, diseases and pests, and main cultivars. The most economically important fruit and nut crops have the most extensive coverage; e.g., the material on tomatoes (under Solanum) covers ten pages. Bibliographies provide the best, but not necessarily the newest, sources. Tables supply the nutritional composition for all genera. Explanations of technical terms appear in the preface. Home gardeners may find this book too technical, with its focus on economic aspects and its specialized language. It will be useful for college, university, and larger public libraries. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. -- M. S. Muskiewicz, University of Massachusetts at Lowell
