The Encyclopedia of Geographic Information Science covers the essence of this exciting, new, and expanding field in an easily understood but richly detailed style. In addition to contributions from some of the best recognized scholars in GIScience, this volume contains contributions from experts in GISâ supporting disciplines who explore how their disciplinary perspectives are expanded within the context of GIScienceâ”what changes when consideration of location is added, what complexities in analytical procedures are added when we consider objects in 2, 3 or even 4 dimensions, what can we gain by visualizing our analytical results on a map or 3D display?

  • The Encyclopedia of Geographic Information Science (230 topics) arrives on the scene during the same year as Springer's Encyclopedia of GIS (1,377 pages; about 300 topics; 281.88€; see CH, Jul'08, 45-5931). Each is edited by top names in the field, each has illustrations, and each is intended as a reference work. The focus of the Sage encyclopedia is "GIScience," an emerging field that concentrates on spatial literacy. Articles range from long (for core themes; about 1,500 words) to quite short (key topics; about 400 words). The focus of Springer's volume is geographic information systems (GIS) rather than GIScience; it deals with more pragmatic, everyday workload matters, and is very tightly focused on the computational aspects of GIS. Thus there is relatively little overlap in names of authors of individual entries in the two encyclopedias, even though some topics are common to each. The cost per page is about the same. Based on its contents, the Encyclopedia of Geographic Information Science merits a place on reference shelves in university libraries.
