Edited by Kyriakos S. Markides, a well-renowned scientist in the field of aging studies, this reference book contains essays that are useful not only for in-depth research study but also for the layperson on a quest for background information in the many areas covered here. Focusing primarily on the health field, this single-volume encyclopedia devoted to the topic of aging serves as a ready-reference tool for those involved with providing, and/or interested in, health care for this designated age group. Unique features for this reference title include offering a "Reader's Guide" listing, which categorizes 11 themes or subject areas by grouping related entries. Users will be able to investigate such topic areas as "Diseases and Medical Conditions," "Drug-Related Issues," "Nutritional Issues," and "Sociodemographic and Cultural Factors" by quickly perusing the subheadings within each area. International in scope with coverage of conditions in such countries and world regions as Mexico, Canada, Latin America, and Europe, along with the United States, to name a few, the entries provide a view of recent research, reporting new findings and conceptual developments impacting the practice and policy of treatment for the aged.Topic area coverage ranges in size from single paragraphs to multiple pages. Facilitating ease of use, there are see and see also references along with a "Further Readings and References" component included at the end of many of the articles. Researchers will use the appendix to find references to official Websites and contact information for health and aging organizations. The volume also provides two ways to identify subjects, with an alphabetical "List of Entries," and the alphabetized subject index, which includes bolded primary subject areas with subheadings listed beneath.Good paper quality and binding along with very legible font size and delineation of entries also contribute to making this a worthwhile reference purchase. Due to its usability by both researchers and the general public, this title is recommended for all academic libraries supporting programs on the aged, and for larger public libraries.
