Designed to be "the most comprehensive knowledge base of educational leadership and school administration that has, as yet, been compiled," this two-volume set admirably achieves its goal. It is current, readable, and well organized. Written by more than 260 faculty members, graduate students, and others in the field, the more than 600 signed entries cover the current state of educational knowledge. The set includes theories, concepts, research, and biographical sketches. Rejecting the notion that a critical core of knowledge is sufficient, the authors focus instead on a nonlinear knowledge dynamic that allows space for ambiguities. The result is an unusually clear and well-written encyclopedia that is alert to the reality of mutating concepts, as well as to innovation. Entries, most of which are one to three pages long, include references to related topics in the set and suggestions for further reading. Other features include lists of figures and tables, the editorial board, and contributors. A thorough index to the set is included in each volume.
