  • This book is a collection of brief summaries of the lives and thoughts of 101 people who have been very influential in determining the course of Western thought. The introduction provides an overview of the history of philosophy and a cursory guide to the major themes in philosophy. Signed entries are arranged alphabetically and include very brief bibliographies. A chronological index situates the thinkers in time and a thematic guide enables the reader to focus on the themes and the thinkers who dealt with them. The index is also helpful for readers who wish to compare these thinkers and find connections among them. The notes on contributors section is very brief and slightly flippant. The entries are fairly easy to read and do offer a credible summary of each philosopher's contribution. However, as a collection of brief synopses of the thoughts of famous philosophers, this book seems to add little; many such books already exist. The thematic index and the guide to themes in the introduction give some added coherence and value to the work. Longer bibliographies and complete lists of the works of the thinkers discussed would make the book more useful.
