  • This biographical dictionary provides accessible information about the lives of the women who served alongside U.S. presidents, from Martha Dandridge Curtis Washington to Laura Welch Bush. Entries are organized in chronological order, each beginning with basic biographical information including previous marriages and names and dates of birth for children. The biographies are divided into five sections: "Early Years," "Marriage," "Family Life," "Presidency," and "Legacy." They are concise and range from two to six pages in length. Four of the appendixes include biographical entries for wives who died before their husband's became president. For bachelor and widowed presidents, entries are included for women who served as "hostess" and "surrogate" first ladies. A black-and-white photograph of the first lady is included with the majority of the entries, but not of the hostess and surrogate first ladies, or deceased wives. The remaining appendixes give general facts and figures, such as the age each woman became first lady and their birthplaces by state. A subject index and an index of first ladies and presidents are included. The first ladies and presidents index primarily points to general information within the biographical entries; any additional references could probably have been included in the general index. School, public, and small academic libraries will benefit from adding this biographical dictionary to their collection. Larger research libraries will find information for scholarly research in other resources.
